Java. Joe. Bean juice. Go juice. Black Gold. Coffee goes by many names.  With 54% of the population partaking in coffee on a daily basis, it has become an essential part of many people’s lives.  Although September 29 was “National Coffee Day,” every day is a good day to celebrate coffee. Let’s take a look at the history of this marvelous beverage and the different types of coffee that are enjoyed by millions every day.

How much coffee is consumed? Americans consume nearly 400 million coffee cups per day, making it the biggest coffee drinking country! The United States imports most of its coffee, and only Hawaii and Puerto Rico actually grow coffee.

Coffee was likely first discovered as far back as the thirteenth century in Ethiopia. As you can imagine, it caught on quickly from there, spreading to Egypt and Yemen in the 15th century. A century later, coffee use moved to Turkey, North Africa, and eventually to Italy and throughout Europe. Coffee beans are grown in many warm weather countries, with Brazil and Vietnam being the two biggest exporters.

So what makes a mocha a mocha and a cappuccino a cappuccino?

• A cappuccino is an Italian coffee drink first made in the early 1900s. It is typically divided into thirds, with the bottom portion being espresso, then hot milk, then frothed milk on top.
• Espresso is simply a concentrated coffee made by forcing hot pressurized water through finely ground coffee.
• Mocha is actually named after the Yemeni port city of the same name. It is a coffee drink made from Arabica beans that give the drink an acidic and slightly chocolate flavor.

Chai is often confused with coffee, but it’s actually an Indian tea drink that is often mixed with spices and herbs. Many Chai drinks also include milk or various sweeteners.
